Truth Social, the social media platform owned by President Donald Trump's media company, has announced plans to launch a live television streaming platform. According to a press release, the platform will focus on “news networks” and “religious channels,” as well as “other content that has been canceled, is at risk of cancellation, or suppressed on other platforms and services.” That's what it means. The service also includes “family friendly” content such as movies and documentaries.
The streaming service will launch in three phases. The company will initially deploy Truth Social's CDN (content delivery network) for streaming to the Truth Social app for Android, iOS, and the web. Next, Truth Social plans to release an over-the-top (“OTT”) streaming app for mobile phones, tablets, and other devices. The final stage of the rollout will involve the launch of a streaming app for TV.
Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) said it has been testing the streaming service on the web and iOS platforms for six months and has “ended the research and development phase.”
“We are excited to take the next big step for Truth Social,” TMTG CEO Devin Nunes said in a press release. “With our streaming content, we aim to provide a permanent home for high-quality news and entertainment that faces discrimination from other channels and content distribution services.”
The announcement comes as Elon Musk's X focuses on transforming social media sites into free speech. “Video First” platform. The social network currently airs original programming hosted by former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and former Fox Sports host Jim Rome. Last month, Musk canceled his talk show contract with former CNN anchor Don Lemon after he was interviewed on the show's first episode.
Truth Social went public last month after shareholders approved a merger between TMTG and special acquisition purpose company (SPAC) Digital World Acquisition. Shares fell this week after the company announced it would sell more shares to raise cash. Although the company is valued in the billions of dollars, TMTG has struggled to turn a profit, with a net loss of about $49 million in 2023 and revenue of just under $4 million.
