Bluesky, the social network that has seen a surge in users this week as users abandon X, says it has “no intention” of using user content to train its generative AI tools. The social network announced on the same day that X (formerly Twitter) will implement new terms of service that will allow the platform to use public posts to train its AI.
“Many artists and creators are based on Bluesky, and we hear their concerns about other platforms training their data,” Bluesky said in a post on the app. “We do not use your content to train our generative AI, nor do we intend to.”
The company also said it uses AI internally to help with content moderation, and that it also uses that technology in its “Discover” algorithm feed. However, Bluesky said, “None of these are Gen AI systems trained on user content.”
For X, the Elon Musk-owned social network uses posts on its platform to “analyze the text and other information you provide, and to otherwise provide, promote, and improve the Service (including for what purposes it may be used). ” details how to grant licenses to companies. Whether it's a generative model or another type, you can train it using our machine learning and artificial intelligence models. ”
Bluesky's user base increased after the U.S. presidential election, as X took a more right-wing approach, especially after Musk used the platform to campaign for President-elect Donald Trump.
The company revealed Thursday night that more than 1 million people have registered on the platform in the past 24 hours. It currently has 17.14 million users as of this writing.
It's worth noting that despite the increase in users, Meta's Threads remains the biggest X competitor. Meta's Threads has over 275 million monthly active users and 15 million new signups so far this month.
