WATCH: TikTok and Meta's latest moves suggest the internet will become more commodified

The internet's giant platforms are slowly merging into larger clumps of sameness, and even the world's most high-profile companies can't escape this trend. TikTok's winning strategy of focusing on short-form, vertical videos has won it fans among other internet platforms, and now TikTok is taking a page out of its competitors' books and borrowing its popularity factors. It is reported that they are doing so.

TikTok is working to launch a new app called TikTok Notes that will allow users to post images, aiming to take on Instagram, a service best known for its still photo-sharing feature. Of course, Instagram has also expanded into videos and Stories itself, incorporating some of its other services into its products.

He also frequently uses other services from Instagram's parent company, Meta. Like just about every social service you can imagine. Remember the big boom that inspired everyone to experiment with popular sharing formats, from Line to Spotify to Instagram to LinkedIn? If one social media service is doing well, others will likely follow suit in some way, perhaps sooner rather than later.

There's good logic behind this effort. The answer is why X wants to be a super app. The more features a service can offer to its user base, the more time users are likely to spend within the walls of your app. Expanding your feature set increases engagement time and the revenue your social media service can earn. At the same time, bloat is a real issue that can dilute the user experience and render apps like Facebook over time.

This theme, the slow commoditization of digital services through identification, explains why LinkedIn is trying to emulate the potential of the New York Times game, and why tech industry giants are trying to become better at everything. The reason is similar to some extent. : The never-ending need to increase revenue. Perhaps this is why your favorite apps feel more and more otherworldly as time goes on. It will evolve away from what made it special and unique. But sticking to those principles is not the way to create a service that will be used by the greatest number of people. For that, you need to be Facebook.
