To give female academics and others focused on AI their well-deserved and overdue spotlight time, TechCrunch is launching a series of interviews highlighting notable women who have contributed to the AI revolution. Start. As the AI boom continues, we'll be publishing several articles throughout the year highlighting key research that may go unrecognized. Click here for a detailed profile.

Crystal Kaufman worked as a political and issue campaign organizer for 10 years before earning a degree in geology. She then turned to gig work and connected with Turkopticon, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting for the rights of gig workers, particularly gig workers, where she uses Amazon's Her Mechanical Turk (AMT) platform. I did.

Currently the lead organizer of Turkopticon, Kaufman recently began working as a researcher at the Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR) Institute, collaborating with others to, in her words, “ We are building a community of workers united to right wrongs. Marketplace platform. ”

Q&A

In a nutshell, how did we get started? in A.I.? What attracted you to this field?

in In 2015, I became ill and was unable to work outside the home. I discovered his AMT platform when doctors were trying to solve a problem. For the next two years, he was able to support himself by working in data-related jobs. in Completed tasks useful for the program A.I., LLM and more. While working on AMT, I became very passionate about solving platform problems and addressing the ethics of data work. in general.

What work are you most proud of (in of A.I. field)?

When I first started working in data nine years ago, few people knew that there was a global workforce silently programming and developing smart devices. A.I. And build your dataset from home. Over the past few years, I have been speaking out about the ethical challenges associated with this workforce and data work through interviews, conference panels, articles, forums, legislative advocacy, speaking engagements, workshops, social media, and more. .It's an honor to be able to be in position in This allows us to educate the public, Congressional leaders, and labor advocates about this workforce and all that it entails.

How do we overcome the challenges of a male-dominated technology industry, and by extension, a male-dominated industry? A.I. industry?

I consider myself very lucky as I have a great support system, including colleagues and mentors. I try to surround myself with people who want to see women and non-binary people succeed. my leaders are woman Also ask supportive men for advice. But one thing we must continue to do is speak out about inequality and move the conversation forward to change it.

What advice would you give? woman trying to enter A.I. Field?

What I would like to say to women who want to join the company is: A.I. This is the field we aim for! Finding a good mentor is very important. Please pay attention to many strong people woman and non-binary people in Access fields for guidance as needed. Build relationships with supportive men. Finally, don't be afraid to speak up. Great ideas come from facing the most difficult questions.

What are the most pressing issues facing you? A.I. As it evolves?

One of the most pressing issues facing technological advances is A.I. It's accessibility.Who has access to the tools? Who is providing the data and maintaining the systems? Who benefits? A.I.• What people are being left behind and how do we change that? How are the workers behind the system treated?

Another issue I would like to raise here is bias. How can we create an unbiased system?

what are some problems A.I. Should users be careful?

I always tell users to look at how their workers are training. A.I. I am receiving treatment. That's an indicator of so many things.

What is the best way to build responsibly? AI?

Involving underrepresented people is essential in creation of A.I.. Those affected by technology should always have a seat at the table. Similarly, A.I. The law must involve data workers. These are the basis of these systems and it would be irresponsible to discuss them without them.

How can investors better promote responsible behavior? A.I.?

I'll just say what I've said before: Nothing is set in stone. in stone. We don't have to accept what is presented. The only way to improve the situation is to speak up and take action.Find other organizations that promote responsible practices A.I.. Challenges to working conditions, practices, methods of use, etc. We challenge anything that seems unfair or irresponsible.
