X announced Thursday that it would begin an experiment to recognize posts that people who normally disagree with are preferred. This experiment utilizes the platform's crowdsourced community notes feature. This is currently used when content is marked misleading or incorrect.
Starting Thursday, a subset of community note contributors will evaluate feedback on a particular post and display callouts to provide feedback. Callouts will be displayed based on similar activity at the beginning of the post.
X says this feedback will help develop open source algorithms that can identify posts that people with different perspectives prefer.

Contributors are asked to share what they like and do what they dislike about their posts. They can choose options such as “I learned something interesting” or “I don't agree with it” when giving feedback.
“People often feel that the world is split, but community notes show that even on controversial topics people can agree,” X wrote in the post. “This experimental new feature is trying to uncover ideas, insights and opinions that bridge perspectives. It can bring awareness to things that resonate widely. It can motivate people to share those ideas in the first place. Ultimately, it can move the world forward in the way people want.”
X released its community notes in 2022 after Elon Musk acquired the social network as it moved away from traditional fact-checking. Since then, this feature has been adopted on Meta's Facebook, Instagram and threads.
